Meet Mel.
Hey there, I’m Mel Cann
Degree-qualified naturopath + lover of real food
How I found naturopathy
While I’ve always had a keen interest in health, naturopathy wasn’t my first career choice. I jumped into a conservation degree straight out of high school, then moved to Margaret River after graduating to follow my then-boyfriend (now husband!) while he studied winemaking.
It was there that I went through a run of health problems, including hormonal issues, poor gut health and chronic UTIs. A co-worker suggested I see a naturopath (I had no idea what a naturopath even was!) and the improvements I experienced in my own health eventually inspired me to go back to uni and study naturopathy.
From patient to practitioner
That experience really changed the way I looked at health. I finally felt listened to, and instead of looking at each symptom on its own, my naturopath took the time to piece everything together. It was such a different experience of healthcare, and it’s had a huge influence on the way I work with my own clients today.
The way I work today
That experience stayed with me. I know how the difference it makes when someone really listens, takes the time to understand what’s going on and involves you in your own health. It’s something I want my clients to feel when they come to see me too.
I love piecing things together and helping my clients understand what might be contributing to their symptoms. I’m naturally curious, so I’m always asking questions, looking for connections and trying to make sense of the bigger picture.
But I’m also very realistic. Life is busy, and looking after your health shouldn’t mean doing everything perfectly. I’d much rather we find changes that actually work for you and your life than give you another long list of things you feel you have to get right.
Outside the clinic
And when I’m not consulting, you’ll most likely find me cheering loudly on the sidelines at one of my kids’ sporting games, drinking what is probably my 5th cup of herbal tea for the day, or enjoying good food – preferably with a pastry involved.
What matters to me
Good healthcare is about more than a treatment plan. These are the things that shape the way I work with every client.
Feeling heard
You know your body better than anyone. I want you to feel comfortable sharing what’s going on, asking questions and being involved in the decisions we make about your care.
Looking at the whole picture
Symptoms rarely exist in isolation. I take the time to consider your health history, nutrition, lifestyle, medications, pathology and the different factors that may be contributing to how you feel.
Keeping it realistic
Your treatment plan needs to work in real life. I aim to give you clear, practical recommendations that feel achievable – not an overwhelming list of things you have to change.
Understanding the why
I don’t want you to leave with a list of things to do and no idea why. I’ll explain what may be contributing to your symptoms, how different aspects of your health connect, and the thinking behind your treatment plan.
